Pinotage is a funny grape.  Most people either love it or hate it.  Lucky for me, I fall into the ‘love’ category.  The wine is found in South Africa and can range from incredibly smoky to rich and fruity like a Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon.

I was lucky enough to share a bottle of the award-winning 2004 La Cave Pinotage with some South African friends over the weekend.  It accompanied our braai and stood up to the food perfectly.  The wine is starting to lose some of its bright color and showing tinges of brown, but that isn’t a detriment (however drink now!). It has a subtle smokiness with beautiful, smooth fruit flavors and a lingering finish.

‘La Cave’ is Wamakersvallei’s premium label and they make a consistent, classic Pinotage.  You’re unlikely to get your hands on a 2004, but if you can find one, snap it up!

Winemakers notes:  a sweet-fruited nose with whiffs of ripe banana. Ripe raspberry tones on the palate are beautifully balanced with firm yet mature tannins. Full bodied yet supple.  It is named after La Cave, the winery’s arched brick cellar in Wellington.
