Jenny’s Tanzania Trip Report – Part II

November 9, 2012  By: Gretchen

Safari specialist Jenny Salentine has been enjoying her most recent visit to Tanzania – we’re not sure she’s ready to come back next week!  Here’s the next installment of her trip report.

While on our morning game drive out of park we saw lots of birds, elephants, zebra and jackals. The elephants in Tarangire never cease to amaze, and the park is so green and beautiful this time of year!  We raced about today, heading to Lake Manyara with its tree-climbing lions, and finally up into the lushly forested Ngorongoro Highlands. Oliver’s Camp provided our picnic lunch which included a beef samosa, little veggie quiche/tart, apple, juice box, nuts, and a muffin – delicious! Today, I was reminded why we love Gibbs Farm in the Ngorongoro Highlands so much, with its views, gorgeous rooms, amazing staff and absolutely wonderful food.  I also had a pleasant surprise visiting the new-ish Lake Manyara Escarpment Lodge.

The Lodge overlooks Lake Manyara and was just opened on July 1, 2011. The 16 chalets are all gorgeous, with beautiful views and an indoor and outdoor shower. It is a lovely escape for honeymooners, special celebrations or for a bit of luxury while exploring Lake Manyara and the Crater. Each chalet has a dedicated butler which adds to the specialness of the property. I’m looking forward to coming back and spending more time here! Tonight we’re staying at Plantation Lodge and I am very much looking forward to a great dinner after such an exciting and busy day…

Woke up to a light mist this morning at Plantation Lodge. We enjoyed a very hearty breakfast (the pancakes were exquisite) and took a nice walk around the gardens before heading up the winding roads to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The mist persisted until we arrived at the Crater floor where we were able to pop the top open and enjoy the sunshine and fantastic game viewing! In total, we saw 6 lions, 1 hyena and 3 babies, ostrich and chicks, 2 jackals, 4 black rhino, herds of wildebeest and zebra and much more. The sun continued to shine brightly for the rest of the day, and we were treated to a lovely African sunset from Plantation Lodge. Looking forward to another delicious dinner tonight before heading to the Serengeti tomorrow.
