New Opening: Rubondo Island Camp

December 26, 2012  By: Gretchen

Africa Adventure Consultants is excited to announce the opening of Rubondo Island Camp.  Rubondo Island lies in the southwest corner of the famous Lake Victoria, the second largest lake in the world. The park comprises Rubondo and eleven smaller islands. The main island  has 80% of its surface covered by pristine, untouched forest.

The island’s virgin forest is the habitat of such rare creatures as wild chimpanzee, which were introduced to Rubondo Island in the 1960′s so that they could benefit from its remote, protected habitat. Elephant and giraffe are dwarfed by ancient trees, in whose shadows lurk animals like bushbuck and genet. Vervet monkey cavort amid the leaves and toward the lakeshore, the elusive sitatunga antelope hides in papyrus swamp; crocodiles lie in wait along the shore and hippo crash through the shallows.

The birdlife alone, comprising over 200 species, is enough to get the most discerning birder twitching. Rubondo Island is a virgin paradise; uninhabited for decades. Visitors to the Island Camp are the only guests on Rubondo – it is the largest island national park in Africa.
