IN LIVINGSTONE’S FOOTSTEPS: THE FINAL JOURNEY

In life, David Livingstone had an enormous impact on Africa through his explorations seeking the source of the Nile, his writings and fights against the slave trade, and his 4-year disappearance, ending with his famous meeting with Morton Stanley on Lake Tanganyika. The events after his death were no less dramatic. On this historical safari, In Livingstone’s Footsteps: The Final Years, guests will visit important sites from Livingstone’s adventures in Tanzania, including Zanzibar, where he started his last expedition, and Ujiji, where Stanley found Livingstone, stating, “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?” Stops also include Mikumi, which was a stopping point for Sussi & Chuma as they carried the explorer’s body back more than 1,000 miles after his death; and Bagamoyo, the final launching point for transporting his body back to England via Zanzibar. Note: Sussi & Chuma did leave his heart in Africa at the time, and you might also on this truly unique tour!
 
DAY 1 – DAR ES SALAAM/ZANZIBAR: Arrive in Dar Es Salaam and fly to Zanzibar. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to the Africa House Stone Town. Overnight here.

DAY 2 – ZANZIBAR: After breakfast, enjoy a historical walking tour of Stone Town, including visits to the slave market, and Livingstone House. Livingstone stayed in this house before sailing to the mainland to begin his last expedition in 1866. Other explorers searching for the source of the Nile and more, such as Burton, Speke, Cameron and Stanley, also stayed here while preparing for their own expeditions. You’ll also visit the Anglican Cathedral, where there is a cross made from the tree under which Livingstone’s heart was buried in Zambia. Overnight Africa House Stone Town. (B)

DAY 3 – ZANZIBAR/MIKUMI: After breakfast you will transfer to the airport for your flight to Mikumi. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to Stanley’s Kopje Mikumi in time for lunch. Enjoy an afternoon game drive. Dinner and overnight here. (B, L, D)

Stanley’s Kopje Mikumi offers exclusive camping 'African' style, combing creature comforts with the real bush experience; ideal for those wishing to be in the "thick of it" immersed amongst the wildlife. Each of the 8 custom designed tents have an a private veranda, ensuite shower and toilet raised on wooden platforms that are sited around the rock kopje overlooking the floodplain.

DAY 4 – MIKUMI: Enjoy a full day of game activities, including a visit to the spot where Sussi & Chuma stopped while carrying Livingstone’s body back to the coast. Meals and overnight Stanley’s Kopje Mikumi. (B, L, D)

DAY 5 – MIKUMI/DAR ES SALAAM: After an early morning game drive, you will be transferred to the airstrip for your flight to Dar and transferred to the Southern Sun Dar Hotel for overnight. (B)

DAY 6 – KIGOMA: After breakfast, transfer to the airport for you flight to Kigoma, located on the shores of beautiful Lake Tanganyika, Africa’s longest and deepest lake. Transfer to your hotel in time for lunch. Later, visit this bustling town including a market, school, and clinic. Dinner and overnight at Kigoma Hilltop Hotel. (B, L, D)

DAY 7 – KIGOMA: After breakfast, you will be met at your hotel and driven to Ujiji for your Livingstone memorial sightseeing tour. Ujiji is the site of the famous meeting on October 28, 1871 when Henry Stanley found Dr. David Livingstone and reputedly uttered the famous words, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" A monument known as the Dr. Livingstone Memorial was erected in Ujiji to commemorate the meeting. Return to the Kigoma Hilltop Hotel for dinner and overnight. (B, L, D)

DAYS 8 & 9 – BAGAMOYO: After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Dar Es Salaam and road and boat transfer to Bagamoyo, where Livingstone’s body rested before being shipped to Zanzibar and on to England. The island has an interesting ecosystem, with many small mammals such as bush babies, suni antelope and bush pig, plus birds and butterflies. Low tide washes up a plethora of exotically colored star fish, sea urchins and crabs. Arrive in time for lunch, followed by an afternoon at your leisure on the beach. Enjoy two days here with meals and overnights at Lazy Lagoon. (B, L, D)

DAY 10 – BAGAMOYO/DAR ES SALAAM: Enjoy your last morning on the beach before being transferred by boat and road to Dar Es Salaam for your outbound flight. (B)
