IN LIVINGSTONE’S FOOTSTEPS: THE EARLY YEARS
9-Day Safari Adventure from Cape Town to Botswana
David Livingstone arrived in Cape Town in March 1841 when it was the administrative center of a small British colony. Most of the sub Saharan interior of Africa was unknown to Europeans but from the east and west coasts they had developed long distance trade (notably in cloth and fire-arms for ivory and slaves) in alliances with African rulers. This trade produced new industries (mining, for example), tribal migrations, massacres and wars. Livingstone's first ten years were spent in mission stations north of Cape Colony and the colony was his lifeline for his first 15 years in Africa. Later he ventured into northern South African and Botswana, exploring the Kalahari. In Livingstone’s Footsteps: The Early Years explores the rich history and exciting pleasures of South Africa’s mother city—Cape Town, plus Botswana’s greater Kalahari region including an optional extension to the Okavango Delta.

OPTIONAL 4-DAY EXTENSION TO OKAVANGO DELTA, BOTSWANA

Although we can’t prove that Livingstone visited the heart of the Okavango Delta, we’re sure he would’ve liked it and highly recommend guests visit this unique wildlife area. On this 3-night/4-day extension, you can explore the hugely diverse habitats of the Okavango Delta with floodplains, wooded islands, mopane woodland and Okavango waterways. Woodland-loving antelope like sable and kudu roam side by side with water-loving red lechwe and reedbuck. The diversity of prey and habitat results in a wide variety of predators: from lion and spotted hyena, to leopard, and occasionally cheetah and wild dog.

DAY 1 – OKAVANGO DELTA:
After breakfast, transfer to Tsigaro Airstrip for your flight to Maun [flight included]. Connect to your flight to Vumbura airstrip [flight included]. Upon arrival you will be met by a camp representative and transfer to camp. Arrive in time for dinner. Overnight Little Vumbura Camp. (B, L, D, Dr)

Little Vumbura Camp is a beautiful 6-roomed tented camp situated to the north of Mombo in a private reserve bordering the Moremi Game Reserve in the northern reaches of the Okavango Delta. Little Vumbura offers both water and land activities. Mokoros (dugout canoes) traverse the flood plains under the guidance of our experienced polers. Open 4x4 Land Rovers allow guests to get close to animals in the savannah areas. Guests usually have the opportunity to see Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Sable and Buffalo, along with all the plains animals, providing an excellent all-round wildlife experience in this remote corner of the Okavango. Walks (on request basis only) around the islands as well as night drives give guests the opportunity to enjoy Africa from a different perspective.  The 6 tented rooms are large and comfortably appointed and each have an en-suite bathroom with hot and cold running water, a shower and flush toilet. The camp has a plunge pool. Access into this area is only by aircraft and then guests are transferred by means of vehicle and then mokoro or boat to the camp from the airstrip.

DAYS 2 & 3 – OKAVANGO DELTA:
Enjoy two days full of safari activities, including mokoro trips, boating and game drives in the Okavango Delta. Overnight Little Vumbura Camp (B, L, D, Dr)
