Kosher Safaris

April 7, 2025  By: Gretchen

A safari can be a life-changing experience. From observing majestic animals in their natural habitats to immersing yourself in some of the most beautiful and iconic landscapes on the planet, safaris offer unforgettable adventure. For Jewish travelers who keep kosher, the experts at Africa Adventure Consultants can help you plan a luxury kosher safari so you can experience the wonders of the wild while ensuring that your religious and dietary needs are met. We partner with a variety of safari camps and lodges that welcome kosher guests. From kosher-lite to Glatt and even Chalav Yisrael and Beit Yosef, there are options to meet different levels of observance.

South Africa has the continent’s largest Jewish population and it’s not unusual to find Beth Din approved hotels and restaurants in its cities. Because of its large Jewish population and an abundance of Jewish travelers visiting, it is one of the most popular destinations for kosher safaris and offers diverse wildlife, stunning landscapes and rich culture.

We partner with a variety of Kosher-friendly properties that offer meals based on the level of kosher classification that they are able to accommodate. It is imperative, especially in the types of remote areas that safari lodges are found, that dietary requirements are advised far enough in advance so that arrangements can be made.

For guests who are kosher-lite, there are plenty of options from Botswana’s Okavango Delta to Kenya’s Masai Mara. Throughout sub-Saharan Africa, we can arrange to have delicious kosher meals flown in – from breakfasts to game drive snacks to dinner – which are then reheated onsite without the seal being broken.

Some of Africa’s finest luxury lodges in the most remote locations have separate kosher kitchens, pots, pans, cutlery and dishes. While you’re immersed in the drama of the African bush, meals featuring the best quality kosher ingredients, including wine, beer and liquor, are sourced and prepared by fantastic chefs. Among our favorites are Royal Malewane in the Kruger region and Belmond Eagle Island Lodge in the Okavango Delta.

On the lite side, some of our partners offer segregated kitchen facilities with separate milk and meat areas that have dedicated food, cutlery and kitchen utensils. The chefs and prep teams are trained to understand kosher requirements and all ingredients are carefully sourced. South Africa’s Dulini Moya, Mukwa River Lodge on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls and the superb Angama Mara in Kenya’s Masai Mara are some of our travelers’ favorites.

At the strictest level, a handful of luxury lodges in South Africa’s most famous private reserves have separate kitchens and all meals – from bush breakfasts to Shabbat dinners – are supervised by a mashgiach. These include Lion Sands Ivory Lodge in Kruger’s Sabi Sand Reserve, Jabulani in the Kapama Reserve and Kings Camp in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve. For larger families, there are a few private villas with separate, locked kosher kitchens with food flown in and prepared by a skilled kosher chef under the supervision of a mashgiach.

To ensure a seamless kosher safari, be sure to let our experts know your kosher requirements so we can design a journey that meets your needs and exceeds your expectations from the initial planning stages. With our expert guidance, you can keep kosher and soar over the Great Migration in a hot air balloon, marvel at the thunderous beauty of the Victoria Falls or watch lion cubs play under the pride’s watchful eyes in the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve.

An expertly planned safari for kosher travelers brings the beauty of the wild and the richness of Jewish life together, so you can create unforgettable memories in the heart of nature.
