The Great Migration in Style

June 1, 2026  By: Gretchen

East Africa’s Great Migration is one of nature’s top spectacles. Guests who visit Tanzania and Kenya to witness the Migration have many options for accommodations, and those who want to see it in style are spoiled for choice. It’s important to remember that the migration is one of perpetual movement, with large numbers of wildebeest, zebra and other plains game constantly ‘chasing’ fresh grasses that sprout after the rains. It follows a clockwise motion around the Serengeti ecosystem, covering 500 or more miles, making it imperative to choose the right location for the best chance to see it. So how to choose?

The experts at Africa Adventure Consultants have more than 200 years combined experience and visit the continent every year to keep our knowledge fresh and up to date. We leverage our deep wisdom to plan your customized safari, helping you choose properties and activities suited to your kind of travel. If you’re keen to see the migration while staying in luxurious accommodations, our staff has some favorites that we’ll explore here. We also encourage you to work with a Journey Specialist to find the properties that fit you best.

Nanyukie Room

Lemala Nanyukie, Tanzania

One of our favorite camps in the eastern Serengeti, Lemala Nanyukie offers beautiful luxury in a tented setting. Cathedral-like tented ceilings give an air of extreme spaciousness while every detail – from lighting to accessories – was meticulously chosen. An oversized bed, spacious lounge and large bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers and free-standing tub makes for a room you just might not want to leave. The plunge pool lets you cool off while gazing at wildlife on the Serengeti plains. Don’t forget to enjoy the spa during your stay as well!
During November and December, the migration continues its quest for fresh grasses, heading south into the east-central area of the Serengeti with Lemala Nanyukie being an excellent choice for the season. This is the time of year when zebra foals are typically born. In addition to new life on the plains, there is an uptick in associated predator action.

Mila room interior

Mila, Tanzania

Another favorite is the intimate Mila, tucked away in a secluded location in Western Serengeti. With just five rooms and one family suite, it is one of the most exclusive camps in the area. Tents have a vintage safari feel, and each is positioned to maximize views over the plains. Beds are palatial, while rainfall showers invite you to relax after an exciting day. Guests at the camp will enjoy a private vehicle and safari guide, with no set schedule – allowing you to explore the wilderness at your own pace. Walking safaris are also on offer. Our favorite time to visit Mila is when the migration is in the Serengeti’s western corridor in June and July.

Singita Sasakwa Interior

Singita Sasakwa, Tanzania

Echoing the design of an Edwardian manor house, Singita Sasakwa offers some of the most spectacular views over the Serengeti and cocoons guests in luxury and elegance. Cottages feature expansive bathrooms, dressing areas, fireplaces, living rooms and verandas. Antiques are featured throughout the lodge, as are local artefacts and tribal touches. Guests enjoy incredible game viewing on drives and walks, but there is so much more. The lodge’s offerings include a stunning swimming pool (in addition to private infinity pools at each cottage and at the private villa), wellness treatments, fitness center, yoga, tennis community walks, anti-poaching unit visits, exploring Sasakwa’s incredible wine collection and more. Its location in the Grumeti Private Game Reserve means any time of year is great to visit, however the migration is typically found in the area in June and July.

Jahazi Suite

Jahazi Suite at Mara Plains, Kenya

The two-bedroom Jahazi Suite at Mara Plains is one of our favorite spots to try to see the migration during August and September. Situated in the Olare Motorogi private conservancy bordering the Masai Mara, Jahazi offers unparalleled exclusivity for guests seeking a luxurious Great Migration safari. It offers a private swimming pool, private butler and an exclusive use safari vehicle and guide. Stylish details like Zanzibari doors add to the delight of escaping to this private retreat with its expansive bedrooms each with over-bed air conditioning, a generous central area and wrap-around veranda. The suite also comes with a pair of high-quality binoculars and professional camera with a selection of lenses for complimentary use during your stay.

Cottar's Room View

Cottar’s 1920s Camp, Kenya

Cottar’s 1920s Camp takes travelers back to the vintage era of safari. Both couples and families are accommodated in elegant, expansive and secluded tents, and will enjoy fine dining, conservation talks and cultural experiences during their stay. After a day packed with wildlife viewing action, you can retreat to the pool and spa tent for relaxation, or enjoy a canvas safari bath in the privacy of your tent’s veranda, taking in the sweeping views across the plains. When not exploring the camp’s organic gardens, enjoying a workout, soaking in its 1920s vibe or taking in some of its unique amenities (be sure to check out the ‘curiosities’ in the Explorer Tent!), you can enjoy even more activities like walking and e-biking. The best time of the year to stay at Cottar’s to have a chance to see the migration is in September and October.
