Penguins in South Africa, Antarctica and New Zealand

June 19, 2026  By: Gretchen

Many of our destinations both in and outside of Africa have a special thread of commonality – similar species! From big cats to marine species, there is wildlife to seek and observe around the world. Today, we’ll look at penguins in some of the countries where we offer adventures.

Penguins are likely not the first species you think of seeing on a visit to southern Africa, but it’s a great place to view them. Found in areas along South Africa’s coast as well as in Namibia, the critically endangered African penguin is surprisingly easy to see in South Africa!

South Africa

Boulders Beach is the most popular place to view the penguins and is a short distance from Cape Town. We include a stop as part of our private day trips around the Cape Peninsula, or can plan a separate, standalone excursion for you. There are other, less visited areas to see the penguins in the Western and Eastern Capes as well – ask your Journey Specialist for details. The birds can be seen on land or by sea, depending on the colony.

Antarctica

If you visit Antarctica with Africa Adventure Consultants, our Zodiac cruises and shore landings will allow you to see some of the seven species of penguin that are found on the continent. Two species are endemic and are found nowhere else – emperor penguins and Adélie penguins – while the remaining five species – gentoo, chinstrap, macaroni, rockhopper and king – will charm you equally! You’ll see the birds among breathtaking scenery, while also enjoying the chance to spot whales, seals and other marine life. You can even snorkel in Antarctic waters, or kayak amid icebergs and wildlife. On board, you’ll learn more about penguins and other local species through naturalist lectures.

New Zealand

An adventure in New Zealand also offers the chance to see penguins in their natural habitat. Thirteen of the world’s 18 species are found in the country’s waters – more than any other. Six species are found in New Zealand with three holding special status – little blue (the world’s smallest, weighing in at just over 2lbs), Fiordland crested (best spotted by boat) and yellow-eyed penguins (the world’s rarest with an estimated 3,000 remaining). There are myriad ways and places to see the birds, including an interactive and personal cruise on Milford Sound, where you might spot penguins and also seals and dolphins. Penguin viewing is seasonal in some areas – be sure to let your Journey Specialist know if seeing penguins is a priority for your trip.
