Traveler’s Corner: Honeymoon Adventures in Southern Africa

October 22, 2021  By: Gretchen

Meghan and Ryan both grew up traveling and developed a love for seeing the world. They wanted to choose a place for their honeymoon that neither had visited before. Having an active adventure was important to them and after a bit of research, realized a safari was the perfect fit!

They settled on visiting South Africa and Zimbabwe for their honeymoon and AAC Journey Specialist Diana put together a ‘great itinerary that covered everything they wanted to do.’ Some of the many highlights of their honeymoon adventure include:

  • Big 5 safari at Tanda Tula – this was the highlight of their trip. Everyone at the camp went out of their way to make their time special. They loved the honeymoon suite, their private dinner and wildlife sightings.
  • A treehouse sleepout – it was a little bit scary, but very fun and memorable!
  • Visiting Cape Town – they LOVED hiking on Table Mountain. Their guide made it extra special with a special picnic just for them.
  • Exploring the Winelands – they really enjoyed e-biking in wine country with its beautiful scenery.
  • Staying at Delaire Graff – the hotel and its views were ‘spectacular.’ They were treated to complimentary wine on arrival and the in-house restaurant was absolutely delicious.
  • Exclusivity – their entire trip was ‘very private throughout.’ When they went to visit Victoria Falls, there were only about 20 other guests, and they saw very few other vehicles while on safari.
  • The guides – Meghan and Ryan found their guides to be exceptional throughout their trip.

Meghan and Ryan’s photo safari left them with many special memories including seeing the Big 5, as well as having fantastic predator sightings. One morning they had the chance to track wild dogs. Meghan and Ryan didn’t yet know a lot about the species and their guide Chad shared a lot of interesting facts about the endangered animals, including how special and rare it can be to see them. They also had the chance to observe cheetahs on a kill. They were the only vehicle to see a mother cheetah with her three juveniles with their catch.

Meghan and Ryan also loved their time staying at Victoria Falls River Lodge. They woke up each day to the call of hippos and always had to be escorted to and from their room as there was so much wildlife around. They also marveled at the wonderful, personalized service. The unique island setting of the lodge is perfect for honeymooners. Each villa is very private, luxuriously appointed and includes a huge veranda and private plunge pool.

Going on safari again is in Meghan and Ryan’s future. We can’t wait to plan their next trip!
